Introduction
The DFG supported International Research Training Group GRK1673 titled “Functional Molecular Infection Epidemiology” will officially start on 01.10.2010.
GRK1673 or “Bridge” is a joint effort of the Freie Universität Berlin, under the umbrella of the Dahlem Research School (DRS), together with the University of Hyderabad, India.
Other renowned universities and institutes involved in Berlin and Hyderabad include the following:

- Robert-Koch-Institute, Berlin
- Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad
- Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad
- Institute of Life Sciences, Hyderabad
- LEPRA – Blue Peter Research Centre (BPRC), Hyderabad
- Mahavir Hospital, Hyderabad
- Owaisi Hospital, Hyderabad
Bridge aims at setting up an appealing and constructive teaching environment and study program, in addition to a highly structured, plan-driven and motivated scientific research module.

The innovative research will focus on a common theme “Functional Molecular Infection Epidemiology” including selective pathogens of interest that still cause a problem to the world public health planning.

Doctoral students will be trained in Berlin and Hyderabad, and an important feature of the program will be the mandatory exchange of students through research stays and lab exchange.
Bridge will provide young researchers from Germany and India a one of its kind studying and research experience. Students doing their doctoral studies within the framework of this program can earn a PhD degree by fulfilment of the requirements of the Dahlem Research School "Biomedical Sciences" program of the Freie Universität Berlin.
